To Flame Bus Road Trip Details
Like your Burning Man adventure, the To Flame journey requires preparation. Check out the details below to make your trip a smooth one.
On the day of your scheduled trip, your name will be checked on the bus' passenger manifest as you board with your guests. The driver will check everyone in so be sure to have your ID and your Burning Man tickets, or confirmation number for will call. For arrivals prior to Sunday, August 26th, you must have an early entry pass. If you do not have a ticket or will call confirmation you will not be allowed to board the bus and there will be no refund for your bus reservation. Remember to keep your ticket on you and not in your luggage under the bus.
As everyone will be loading a lot of gear onto the bus, we have strict size limitations on what you can bring. You are guaranteed space in the undercarriage of the bus for your two large items, (with your To Flame luggage tags). The large bag may not exceed 62 inches (157 cm) when you total length + width + height. You can bring 15 gallons of water with you by purchasing a specially sized container at Save Mart and this will count as one of your large items. The small item allowed must be a tent bag or equivalent thereof: a book bag or handbag, for example, and must fit under your seat. As space is at a premium, we will be packing slowly, so please be patient during the boarding process. Buses will leave promptly after the bus is loaded, so please arrive with plenty of time to get settled before the scheduled departure.
To Flame Buses (except express trips) will make an official one hour stop at the Save Mart in Reno where you can buy a bike, food, bulk water and other supplies. From goggles to EL Wire, Save Mart has everything you might still need for the Burn. Once you have all your nifty goods loaded on the bus, the driver will check everyone in and depart for the final stretch of the journey. There will be one final stop in Gerlach for 20 minutes before heading for the Playa Gates.
Reserve space on the To Flame Bus for your bike while you book a seat. Each one-way trip needs a separate bike reservation. You can bring your own bike or, buy a refurbished bike at Save Mart on the day of the trip. If you intend to buy a bike at Save Mart, please remember to reserve here for your space. There will not be room for your bike if you do not reserve ahead of time.
Luggage and Supplies
Space on the bus is strictly limited to the items listed and cubic footage will be verified. Note that the storage space everyone is allowed includes any items that may be purchased at Save Mart. Any overage will simply not be allowed on the bus. We must be strict on this fact to ensure that we provide everyone the room they need. If you need to bring additional items, please reserve space for it during your reservation process. If you have not done so before you arrive, there will not be room for your items on the day of.
While the To Flame Trip Itinerary approximates driving time to the Playa, we can’t predict the length of the line at the Burning Man gates. Be prepared to wait an additional 2 - 8 hours in line before entering the Playa. Luckily, you get to pass the time pre-partying with fellow Burners on a comfy bus!
You NEED your Burning Man ticket, or confirmation number for will call, to enter the gates. No tickets, no Burning Man for you...seriously. Once To Flame buses arrive at the Gate, there will be a thorough inspection of everyone’s gear and belongings. Read the Burning Man Survival Guide for information about what not to bring to Burning Man.
The exact Bus Depot dropoff location is yet to be determined for 2013. Please check back soon for details.
To Flame will have its own bus depot near center camp this year. Once the coordinates are provided you can plan to have your camp’s art car pick you up, or map out your journey from the bus depot to your camp in advance. To Flame buses may arrive at the playa in the evening, so you need to be prepared to transport your gear to your camp in whatever conditions there may be. Black Rock Bicycles sells bike trailers that are easy to assemble. These can be purchased during the Save Mart stop.
The Depot will be centrally located, near Center Camp and the Playa Information Tent. Unfortunately, we can’t drop passengers off at their specific camps. So please make arrangements to get from the Bus Depot / Center Camp to your camp. Click here for a detailed 2012 Black Rock City Plan.
The Bus Depot is also your departure point to catch your To Flame bus back home. Please arrive at the Bus Depot with all your belongings at least 30 minutes prior to the posted time so the bus can make a timely departure.
Please be prepared for a long wait as we exit Black Rock City. If you are going to Reno Airport, please make sure to allow for 6-8 hours of total travel time before your flight. The times above are estimated as they are calculated based on simple mileage and average speed and we can not predict the amount of time it may take to exit due to traffic.
To Flame exodus buses will be making an official stop at the Keystone Save Mart to deposit your trash and recyclables. Reserve a spot for your bike on the return trip and you can also recycle your bike there.
